How I Finally Learned to Meditate Daily (Even After Having a Kid)

I recently shared one of my favorite brain hacks for building new habits: temptation bundling. Specifically, how I trained myself to meditate daily by only letting myself drink my sacred morning coffee after I meditated.

It worked beautifully… until I had a kid.

Suddenly, my calm morning routine was no match for reality. Quiet coffee time was replaced by something far less predictable and far more jarring to my nervous system. (Thankfully, he’s very cute.)

Morning meditation quickly became a “nice idea” instead of a reliable habit. And if I’m being honest, I spent years doing the on-again, off-again meditation tango.

You know the one:
Meditate for a week.
Feel amazing.
Fall off for a month.
Feel annoyed with yourself.
Repeat.

Why Daily Meditation Fell Apart for Me

After becoming a parent, the structure that helped me meditate consistently – disappeared. And without that structure, my good intentions weren’t enough.

I didn’t need more discipline.
I didn’t need to want it more.
I needed a new system.

The Tool That Finally Helped Me Meditate Daily

In 2025, I cracked the code.

The thing that finally helped me meditate daily wasn’t deeper spiritual enlightenment or better self-control.

It was Insight Timer.

Yes, it has the world’s largest free meditation library. Yes, there’s a meditation for literally everything – panic spirals, pain relief, sleep, existential dread at 2 a.m.

But that’s not why it worked for me.

What changed everything was the widget.

Front and center on my phone, Insight Timer quietly shows my meditation streak. No shame. No pushy notifications. Just a very clear, very visible reminder of how many days in a row I’ve shown up.

Why This Small Visual Nudge Worked

Here’s why that mattered more than I expected.

First, I’m competitive – especially with myself. Once I had a streak going, my brain said, Absolutely not. We are not breaking this now. Watching that number grow scratched just enough of my achievement itch to keep me coming back.

Second, I’m extremely visual. If I haven’t meditated yet, the widget reminds me. Midway through the day it  displays a yellow exclamation mark that says “Keep it going” and by evening it shows a red exclamation mark that says “Save your streak!”

And honestly? I need that reminder.
Repeatedly.
Kindly.
Without judgment.

The Real Takeaway

Daily meditation is incredibly powerful. But sometimes the difference between knowing that and actually doing it is the right nudge in the right place.

For me, that nudge lives on my phone, quietly keeping me honest.

And yes, I highly recommend both a daily meditation practice and Insight Timer. Your nervous system will thank you. Your future self probably will too.

To make this even easier, I’ve curated several folders with my favorite meditations. If you’re ready to start, you can simply pick one and press play.

No spiraling about which one to choose.
No excuses.
Just begin.
